How To Enable AMD Fluid Motion Frames (AFMF 2) On The Legion Go

AMD Fluid Motion Frames also known as AFMF 2 is a technology developed by AMD to improve the smoothness and responsiveness of gameplay in DirectX 11 and 12 games. It achieves this by using a technique called frame generation, which essentially analyzes existing frames and creates new ones in between them, effectively doubling your frame rate.

Lenovo officially added AFMF 2 to the Legion Go on January 24th, 2025. You can download the driver here.

AFMF 2 offers several improvements over the first version:

  • Improved frame generation: It can now generate more consistent frames, even during fast-paced motion.
  • Expanded support: It supports a wider range of games, including those using OpenGL and Vulkan APIs.
  • Enhanced performance: It offers better performance, especially on integrated graphics.

AFMF 2 Settings

Search Mode is a setting within AFMF 2 that controls how aggressively the technology generates new frames. It balances the trade-off between image quality and smoothness.

  • Standard: This mode is optimized for 1080p resolution and prioritizes image quality over frame generation. It’s less aggressive in generating new frames, especially in scenes with high motion, to avoid potential artifacts.
  • High: This mode is designed for 1440p and higher resolutions. It prioritizes frame generation smoothness and is more aggressive in inserting new frames, even in high-motion scenes. However, this may sometimes lead to slight reductions in image quality.
  • The “Auto” setting automatically selects the appropriate Search Mode based on your display resolution.

AMD Fluid Motion Frames 2 (AFMF 2) offers two performance modes: Quality and Performance.

Quality Mode:

  • Prioritizes image quality and smoothness, especially during fast-paced motion.
  • Offers the best visual experience, but may require more GPU power.
  • Recommended for high-end GPUs and high-resolution displays.

Performance Mode:

  • Prioritizes frame rate and reduces the computational overhead of AFMF 2.
  • Ideal for lower-end GPUs or when you need higher frame rates.
  • May sacrifice some image quality, especially during fast motion.

While AFMF can make games feel smoother, it can also introduce some additional input lag. This is because the generated frames are not real, and there is a slight delay between when you make an input and when the corresponding frame is displayed on the screen.

  • AFMF is recommended to be combined with AMD Radeon Anti-Lag to reduce in-game latency while maintaining a minimum in-game fps of 60.
  • Due to the potential latency impact of AFMF, it must be manually enabled in the per-game settings for certain fast-paced competitive titles, even if AFMF was already enabled globally. Gamers are free to enable AFMF in these titles based on their preference and gameplay style, however, they may not experience optimal performance – specifically at lower frame rates.
  • AFMF may be enabled or disabled on the fly using the default hotkey of Alt-Shift-G.
  • AFMF currently requires the game to be played in fullscreen mode with VSYNC disabled.
  • For better compatibility with borderless-fullscreen titles, Windows 11 users can enable “Optimizations for windowed games“.

How To Enable AMD Fluid Motion Frames AFMF 2

How to know if AFMF is enabled

You can enable AMD’s In-Game overlay that will display when a game is launched. This overlay will show for a brief moment at the top right of your screen and will show if you have AFMF enabled or not. Note: this overlay does not show for every game.

    • Open up the AMD Software App.
    • Click the Settings Icon at the top right and then click Preferences.
    • Enable the In-Game Overlay.
